Calculations let the form compute a number from the answers, such as a price, a score or a quantity. You show the result in the form, on the thank-you page and in mails, send visitors on depending on the result, or use it for a payment and as a lead score.
Requirements
- Funnelforms Pro. This feature is not included in Funnelforms Free.
- A form with fields whose answers give a number: Choice and Dropdown (with a number on the answers), Number, Slider, Rating, Short text, Long text or Repeat group.
- Changes reach visitors only after you publish the form.
In Funnelforms Free, the Settings workspace shows More settings with "These come with Funnelforms Pro:", Calculations in the list and the link More about Funnelforms Pro. If a form already uses calculations or lead scoring, for example after switching from Pro to Free, Free also shows the Calculations card so you can remove them; the form can be published only without them.
Where to find it
Funnelforms → Forms → open a form → workspace Settings → section Calculations.
You enter the number of an answer in the Structure workspace: select the question → Answers → column Number. The column appears once the form has a calculation. The name a field has in formulas is under Advanced → Variable name on the question.
Features at a glance
- Formula with numbers, fields in square brackets, operators, comparisons and functions.
- Insert a field and Insert a result: pick fields and results of other calculations from a list.
- Keys for operators and clickable Functions, each with an example.
- Try it out: test the formula with answers and change the numbers of answers in place.
- Decimal places, Number format and Unit decide how the result looks.
- Show the result adds the result to a new step, a thank-you page or a mail in one click.
- Continue by result sends visitors to a different target after a step, depending on the result.
- Lead score, the amount of a payment, the value of a conversion and the points of a quiz.
- The form's analytics show average, median, range and the spread of results.
Step by step
Example: the price is the quantity times 25, with 10 percent off from 10 seats.
- In the Structure workspace, add a Number question such as "How many seats do you need?" and check its Variable name under Advanced, for example
quantity. - Go to the Settings workspace → Calculations and click Add calculation. The new calculation is called "Calculation 1".
- Enter "Price" under Name. The name is shown with the result in entries, the PDF and where you add the result.
- Pick the question under Insert a field. Funnelforms adds
[quantity]to the Formula. - Complete the formula to
[quantity] * 25 * if([quantity] >= 10; 0.9; 1). You findifunder Functions. - Enter a quantity under Try it out and read the Result.
- Choose 2 Decimal places, a Number format such as
1,234.50and a Unit such as$1,234. - Under Show the result → Add it to, choose for example A new step before the contact step. Funnelforms confirms with "Added to …".
- Click Publish.
Continue by result
- Open the calculation and, under Continue by result → After the step, choose the step after which the decision is made.
- Funnelforms adds a rule. Choose the comparison (from, above, up to, below, exactly, not), the value and the target.
- Add rule adds more levels. Under Otherwise you set where everybody else goes.
- Also after uses the result after another step as well.
The result counts the answers given up to that step. Rules are checked from the top; the first that holds decides.
How it works
What can go into a formula?
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Number | 25, 0.9, 0,9 | Point or comma as decimal mark |
| Field | [quantity] | The answer's number, 0 when unanswered |
| Number of answers | count([extras]) | How many answers a field has |
| Points of a type | [question:type] | Points of a question's answers for one type; the personality quiz sets this itself |
| Result | {calc1} | The result of another calculation |
| Operators | + - * / % ^ | % is the remainder of a division, ^ the power |
| Comparison | < <= > >= = != | Gives 1 (holds) or 0 |
| Parentheses | ( ) | Set the order |
Separate the values of a function with a semicolon. A comma between two digits is a decimal comma.
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
round(x; 2) | Rounds to decimal places, with -2 to hundreds |
floor(x), ceil(x) | Rounds down or up, also with places |
min(…), max(…) | The smallest or largest value, for example for a minimum price |
if(condition; then; else) | If, then, else. Without "else" the result is 0 |
sum(…), avg(…) | Sum and average |
abs(x) | The value without its sign |
and(…), or(…) | 1 when all or one of the conditions hold |
count([field]) | How many answers a field has |
The formula also knows sqrt (square root), not (turns 1 into 0 and back) and argmax (the position of the largest value, used by the personality quiz). They are not listed under Functions, but you can type them. Functions take up to 50 values.
Which number does each field give?
| Field | Number in the formula |
|---|---|
| Choice, Dropdown | The Number of the chosen answer, the sum for a multiple choice. Answers without a number count 0. |
| Number, Slider, Rating | The answer. |
| Short text, Long text | The number at the start of the text. "12 pieces" gives 12, "many" gives 0. |
| Repeat group | The number of items. |
| File upload, Signature, E-mail address, Phone number, Web address, Date, Time, Address, Appointment | Only through count([…]). Insert a field adds these fields that way. |
In a knowledge quiz, a choice question counts 1 when exactly the right answers are chosen, otherwise 0.
Results of other calculations
Insert a result uses the result of another calculation, such as a subtotal in a total price. A calculation cannot use itself, not even through another one. Funnelforms then reports "The calculations would use each other in a circle." The plugin no longer computes chains of more than 20 calculations; the result then cannot be computed.
How does the result look?
- Decimal places (0 to 4) and Number format (
1.234,50,1,234.50,1 234,50,1’234.50,1234,50,1234.50) set the display. Rounding is half up. Comparisons use the unrounded value. - Unit puts a sign before or after the number: None,
1.234 €,€ 1.234,$1,234,£1,234,CHF 1’234,12 %or Own text… with Before the number and After the number (up to 20 characters each, such as "approx. " or " m²").
Where can I show the result?
Show the result → Add it to offers A new step before the contact step, every thank-you page (Thank-you page: …) and every mail (Mail to the visitor: …, Mail to you: …). Funnelforms adds a line with the name and the result there. Places that already show the result are left out.
Copy the Placeholder, such as {{calc:calc1}}, with Copy placeholder. It works in the texts of steps and the contact step, on thank-you pages, in mails, the payment description and redirects.
Where else is a calculation used?
- Lead score: choose the calculation under Lead score. Its result rates each entry; entries can be sorted and filtered by it. No lead score turns it off.
- Payment: as the amount, see Setting up payments.
- Conversion: as the value of a conversion.
- Quiz: the quiz counts its points in a calculation of its own, which it keeps itself.
- Paths: in rules under Calculations, see Conditions and paths.
In the list, calculations carry the badges Lead score, Payment or Quiz. Below a calculation it says "Used in …". As long as it is used, Delete calculation is locked.
Where do I see which results come out?
In the form's analytics (Pro only): Funnelforms → Statistics → click the form. The Calculations card shows "Results of the sent entries." with Average, Median, Range and a bar chart "Spread of the results of …". The figures appear from 3 results; before that it reads "The average shows from 3 answers on."
What happens if a calculation is not possible?
If the formula divides by 0, takes the root of a negative number or uses a result that cannot be computed, visitors see "An error occurred in the calculation!" in its place. Try it out then shows cannot be computed. When the form is sent, the plugin computes every result again on the server; visitors never see the formula.
Formulas from Funnelforms 3
Calculations taken over show "Taken over from Funnelforms 3: …". If a formula could not be taken over, the calculation carries Does not compute. Write the formula again in that case.
What does Funnelforms Free do with calculations?
Free does not compute. Free cannot publish a form with calculations, for example after switching from Pro to Free ("The form uses "Calculations and price calculators", which is part of Funnelforms Pro …"). A form that is already published with calculations is not shown on the website by Free. The calculations stay saved; with Pro they are back.
Best practices
- Choose meaningful variable names, such as
quantityinstead ofq_3. - Use Insert a field and Insert a result so that no name has a typo.
- Test every formula under Try it out, also with 0 and without an answer.
- Split long formulas into subtotals and combine them with Insert a result.
- Show the result before the contact step so visitors see it before they send.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| "The formula cannot be read from character … on." | A character is not allowed. | Use only numbers, [fields], {results}, operators, parentheses and functions. |
| "A parenthesis is not closed or not opened (character …)." | Parentheses do not match. | Add or remove the parenthesis at that place. |
| "There is no function by this name …" | Typo in a function name. | Pick the function under Functions. |
| "The function at character … gets too many or too few values." | Values separated with a comma instead of a semicolon, or values missing. | Separate the values with ;. |
| "[…] is not a field of this form and counts as 0." | The variable name belongs to no field. | Pick the field with Insert a field. |
| The result is 0. | The answers have no Number. | Enter the numbers under Answers → Number. |
| Visitors see "An error occurred in the calculation!". | Division by 0 or a result cannot be computed. | Catch the case with if or max, for example [price] / max([quantity]; 1). |
| Delete calculation is locked. | The calculation is still used. | Remove it where "Used in …" names it. |
Tips
- While the result loads, the placeholder briefly shows "…".
- Calculate percentages with factors, for example
[price] * 0.19for 19 percent. - Under Try it out you change the Number of an answer in place (Value of "…"); the change applies to the question.
FAQ
Can I write "if … then" into a formula? Yes, with if(condition; then; else), for example if([m2] > 100; 0.9; 1).
Do visitors see my formula? No. The form asks the plugin for the finished result, and the plugin computes it again when the form is sent.
Can I use one calculation in another? Yes, with Insert a result. It then appears as {id} in the formula.
Where do I see the result of an entry? Under Funnelforms → Entries in the entry, section Calculations, with the calculation's name.
