Field types at a glance

A form consists of steps, and each step holds one or more fields. This article introduces all field types you can add in the editor, names their main settings and says whether Funnelforms Free has them. It helps you pick the right type for each question.

Requirements

• You need the right to edit forms.
• Most field types are available in Funnelforms Free and Funnelforms Pro. Slider, Address, File upload, Signature, Repeat group, Appointment and, in the contact step, HTML are Pro only (overview below).
• Address fields with Google suggestions need your own Google Maps key (see the section on the address).

Where to find it

Funnelforms → Forms → open a form → Structure. In the side panel on the left, the Add tab lists the field types in three groups: Pick answers, Type in and Content and more. The settings of a field appear on the right under Properties as soon as you select it.

Step by step

1. Open your form in the Structure workspace.
2. Click a field type in the side panel, for example Date. A new step with this field is inserted after the selected step.
3. Alternatively, drag the type onto the canvas. If you drag it onto an existing step, it is added there as another field.
4. Select the step or the field. On the right you change the Question, the Description and the settings of the type.
5. Turn on Required if the question must be answered.

How it works

Which field types are in Free, which are Pro only?

In Funnelforms Free the Pro field types still appear in the side panel, with a Pro badge. Hovering over one shows, for example, "Slider: in Funnelforms Pro". You can neither click nor drag them. If a form already contains a Pro field, for example from an import or after switching from Pro to Free, the field says "This field type is part of Funnelforms Pro. Delete the question to publish the form." While the field stays, the form cannot be published in Free, and a Free website doesn't show it to visitors.

Which settings do all fields share?

Every field has a Question, usually a Description, often a Placeholder and the switch Required. Under Advanced you find the Variable name, which calculations, placeholders and integrations use to address the field. New fields get a unique name automatically. The dropdown Insert an earlier answer (Pro only) puts the answer of an earlier field into the question, for example for a personal greeting. Text and media and File upload are not set to required at first. In a step with several fields, Show this field sets whether a field appears only on certain answers, in Free on the chosen answer of a choice or dropdown question, see Show fields only on certain answers.

Pick answers

• Choice: Visitors click one or several answers, optionally with icons or images. With Several answers allowed you set At least and At most. Continue on its own at this number of answers moves on to the next step by itself.
• Dropdown: A list that opens on click. You can set the Text while nothing is chosen, turn on a Search box above the answers and enable Several answers allowed.
• Rating: Visitors rate on a scale. The Lowest rating is 0 or 1, the Highest rating is between 2 and 10. Under Look you choose Stars, Numbers or Colour scale. With Faces or Own texts you show faces or your own texts for each point. Text at the low end and Text at the high end label the ends.
• Slider (Pro only): Visitors pick a number on a slider. You set Minimum, Maximum, Steps of and Starts at. A range with two handles lets visitors pick a range from … to …. In addition there are a Unit (before or after the number), the Thousands separator and the switch Visitors can type the number.

Type in

• Short text and Long text: Single-line and multi-line text. You can set Minimum length and Maximum length. For short text, Allowed input decides what may be typed: Anything, No digits, Digits only or Birthday (dd.mm.yyyy). Browser fills in tells the browser which stored data it may suggest, for example First name or Postcode.
• E-mail address, Phone number, Web address: Input fields for the respective format, with placeholder and required.
• Number: A number with optional Minimum and Maximum.
• Date: Visitors pick a date. You set the Date format (for example 31.12.2026 or 12/31/2026). With A period with start and end visitors pick from … to …. With Dates that can be chosen you allow Any date, Today and later or Today and earlier; Earliest date and Latest date limit the range further.
• Time: A time of day; Minutes between times (1 to 60) sets the grid.
• Address (Pro only): See below.

Content and more

• Text and media: An information step with text (HTML), optionally with an image or video above it. In Pro, Funnelforms fills placeholders such as {{field:email}} in the text with the answers; in Free, earlier answers in a step are part of Pro. Under How the form goes on you choose With a button, By itself after a wait or Loading screen. The loading screen has the animations Spinner, Dots, Progress bar, Ring with percent and Magnifying glass, plus your own Texts while waiting.
• File upload (Pro only): Visitors upload files. You set Largest file (MB), Most files (up to 20) and limit the allowed extensions with Only these file types, for example pdf, jpg, png. If the field is empty, every type WordPress allows is accepted. Show small pictures of chosen images shows thumbnails.
• Signature (Pro only): Visitors sign directly in the form. Visitors may upload a picture of their signature also allows an image upload. Own ink colour sets the colour of the signature.
• Repeat group (Pro only): Visitors fill in a group of fields several times, for example one row per person. The editor offers At least and At most as limits for the number of items. A new group starts with one text field "Name"; the fields inside the group cannot currently be changed in the editor. This feature is currently in progress.
• Appointment (Pro only): An appointment-booking step. You choose the appointment type that you set up beforehand.

Address with Google and location button

The Address field asks either for everything in one field (One input for the whole address) or separately for street, number, postcode and city; Ask for the country adds the country. With Suggestions and map from Google address suggestions and a map appear. This needs your own Google Maps key under Funnelforms → Settings → General in the section Address fields. Visitors then load Google Maps. In addition you get Button to use the visitor's location (the browser asks the visitor first), the start position of the map (Map starts at latitude and and longitude) and the Zoom of the map (1 to 22).

Fields in the contact step

The contact step finishes the form and sends the entry. Its fields are Salutation, Name, E-mail address, Phone number, Text, Long text, List (a choice from your own answers, one per line), Checkbox (a box with its own text, for example for a newsletter), Consent (text with links, for example to the privacy policy), HTML (free text without input, Pro only) and Captcha (uses the spam protection set up for the site). For the e-mail field you can enforce Business addresses only. For name, e-mail, phone and text you can choose an Icon in the field. A Phone verification field only occurs in forms taken over from Funnelforms 3 and cannot be added anew.

Best practices

• Choose the narrowest fitting type: E-mail address instead of Short text checks the format.
• For numbers with a fixed range, offer a Slider rather than a text field.
• For Date, set Dates that can be chosen to Today and later if only future dates make sense.
• For File upload, limit file types and size so that only usable files arrive.
• Keep required fields to what is necessary; every extra required answer costs completions.

Troubleshooting

Tips

• With a step selected, the side panel shows the group Field in this step at the top: a click adds the field to that step instead of creating a new step.
• Duplicate on a field or step copies the settings; the field gets a new variable name.
• The name of the field type appears on the step on the canvas, so you can recognise it at a glance.

FAQ

How many fields can a step have? At least one. The editor names no upper limit.

Can I also add fields in the contact step? Yes. Select the contact step; the side panel then shows the contact fields under Field in this step.

Can visitors upload files in Funnelforms Free? No. File upload is part of Funnelforms Pro.

Where do I find the visitors' answers? In the Entries area of the Funnelforms menu.

What does the variable name mean? It is the internal name of the field for calculations, placeholders and integrations. It may contain only letters, digits, underscore and hyphen; the editor replaces other characters with an underscore.
